Liga MB Round 11: Leader Aguila gets another victory

Leader Aguila delivered the thirteenth win on Thursday night. This time they crushed 7th ranked Nejapa (6-9) 91-70. Aguila dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Nejapa's 26. Aguila had a 28-17 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Nejapa's players. The best player for the winners was Panamanian forward Pablo Rivas (198-1994, college: NCCU) who scored 42 points (!!!) and 4 assists. Puerto Rican power forward Carlos Lopez-Sosa (209-1990, college: UNLV) chipped in 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). American guard Kylon Higgins (190-1993, college: Arkansas Tech) produced a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds for the hosts. Aguila (13-2) have an impressive series of eleven victories in a row. They maintain first place. Nejapa lost third consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with nine games lost. Aguila are looking forward to face Santa Ana (#10) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Nejapa will play against Santiagueno and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (0-15) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 102-65 loss to second ranked Quezaltepeque (12-3) in Quezaltepeque. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 18 rebounds and 4 blocks. Marc Montavious contributed with 16 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. American swingman Ameer Biddle (193, college: PS Wilkes Barre) answered with 25 points and 6 rebounds for Chalchuapa. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Quezaltepeque. They maintain second place with 12-3 record behind leader Aguila. Chalchuapa lost their fifteenth game in a row. They still close the standings with 15 games lost. Quezaltepeque will play against Cojute (#6) in Cojutepeque in the next round. Chalchuapa will play on the road against Metapan (#4) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

In the last two games of round 11 Cojute was defeated by San Salvador in a road game 103-91. Santa Ana was beaten by Brujos at home 100-106.



Quezaltepeque - Chalchuapa 102-65

Bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (0-15) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 102-65 loss to second ranked Quezaltepeque (12-3) in Quezaltepeque. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. They dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Chalchuapa's 40. They outrebounded Chalchuapa 41-28 including 28 on the defensive glass. Quezaltepeque players were unselfish on offense dishing 27 assists comparing to just 5 passes made by Chalchuapa's players. San Salvador - Cojute 103-91

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 6th ranked Cojute's (8-6) road loss to fifth ranked San Salvador (10-3) 91-103. San Salvador outrebounded Cojute 40-28 including a 32-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. Cojute was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Dominican Jonatan Bello (-2001) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!), 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Dominican forward Adonis Lopez (-1997) contributed with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. San Salvador's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American swingman Andravious Smith (196-1995, college: Tougaloo) answered with a double-double by scoring 31 points and 11 rebounds and Lee Vasquez (176-1991) added 26 points and 9 assists in the effort for Cojute. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. San Salvador moved-up to third place, which they share with Metapan. Cojute at the other side keeps the sixth position with six games lost. San Salvador will play against league's leader Aguila in San Miguel in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Cojute will play at home against Metapan (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when tenth ranked Brujos (3-5) defeated on the road 9th ranked Santa Ana (3-12) 106-100. Brujos made 17-of-22 charity shots (77.3 percent) during the game. American forward Arinze Obiora (196-1997, college: UMass Dartmouth) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!) and 20 rebounds. Joshua Quincy contributed with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Worth to mention Obiora played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. American point guard Armani Chaney (178-1997, college: Tennessee St.) answered with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists and Puerto Rican center Giovanny Martinez (206, college: Jarvis Christian) added 22 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks in the effort for Santa Ana. Four Santa Ana players scored in double figures. Santa Ana's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Brujos moved-up to eighth place. Santa Ana lost their third game in a row. They dropped to the tenth position with 12 games lost. Brujos will play against Santiagueno (#9) in Usultan in the next round. Santa Ana will play at home against Santa Tecla and hopes to get back on the winning track.
